The Greatest Love
Dear Friends and Brothers,
In talking to people door-to-door some give as their reason for not believing in God that if God exists He is an evil uncaring God. This is because God allows evil in the world. But the difficulty is that evil and sin live within all of us; God would have to wipe all of us from the Earth to do away with evil (Romans 3:10-20). Because we sin all the time we don’t see the horribleness of our sin to God.
But God’s hatred for sin and evil is shown by what He did to destroy it and defeat it forever. Here we see God’s love and His hate coming together. If you love your children it means you hate those who would do them harm. If you saw children in danger you would protect them even at the cost of your own life. This is the kind of love God has for us. “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).
Our sin separates us from God. God loves us. He dealt with sin the only way it could be destroyed forever. He overcame it with His love (Romans 5:8). God gave the most precious thing He had to save us. The gift of His own beloved Son. That kind of love took the universe by surprise. The forces of evil never in their wildest nightmare dreamed God would do such a thing. No greater act of love has ever been seen from all of eternity. “Who is like the Lord our God, the One who sits enthroned on high, who stoops down to look on the heavens and the earth? He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes, with the princes of their people” (Psalm 113:5-8).
Can you see what it means to reject this gift of love? This is such a glorious gift. Can you see what it is to love sin more than this gift? This is why there is no hope for those who reject such a gift.
